Three Final Four appearances in the NCAA tournament aren't sufficient at UCLAa'basketball mind instructor Ben Howland was ignored Sunday, 1 day after the college denied multiple studies that Howland was fired. Therefore UCLA gets an "A" for demanding superiority but gets a "C" in semantics. More importantly, it gets an "A" for listening to its group of followers. And its wallets. In the last decade, Bruin fans have spearheaded grass roots campaigns to rid themselves of what they perceive as average upper-level administration in the high-profile activity plans of baseball and soccer. Unfortuitously, UCLA had been slow to answer its fans' unhappiness and at times seemed out of touch, particularly to the increasing popularity of college basketball. As Bruin basketball coaches Karl Dorrell and Rick Neuheisel both likely were on life support twelve months a long time. Dorrell coached at UCLA for five periods while Neuheisel only coached four but two of Neuheisel's teams went 4-8. Since both Dorrell and Neuheisel were UCLA alumni, maybe UCLA believed it owed it to them to offer them the advantage of doubt inside their final years as head coaches of UCLA football. It's a good touch, especially because a lot of instructors aren't given enough time to turnaround a programa'I am considering you Southern Missa'but when it is apparent an instructor isn't keeping up with the Joneses, aka USC, it's time to create decisions with logic, not concern. Whether you agree or disagree with Howland's termination, usually the one obvious point made by UCLA is this: We're not playing around anymore. And that is a good thing for a school which actually has not done a whole lot in football because it won its first and only national championship (UP) in football in 1954a'the last discussion championship it won was in 1998 under Bob Toledo. UCLA has been placed as a hockey school considering that the onset of the BCS time nevertheless the vibe is currently different. It is located in among the most fertile recruiting grounds for both baseball and football and is surrounded by the greatest marketing presence in the country. The school is steeped in both academic and athletic excellencea'no other school has gained more national titles (team) than UCLA (108). This is actually the college that gave us Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (nee Lew Alcindor). This is also the college that celebrated wildly in 2006 when its football team upset USC 13-9 and prevented the Trojans from likely to a third consecutive BCS Championship. The Bruins might end up heading 7-6 that season and dropping to Florida State in the Emerald Bowl but that annoyed of USC was what defined the Bruins' season. UCLA football coach John MoraUSA TODAY Sports Schadenfreude was previously the catalyst for UCLA soccer supporters' celebrations but that's now changed. In place of monitoring what USC soccer is doinga'and using that as a measure to measure its own happinessa'UCLA has now turned its awareness of itself. And Jim Mora is really a blood-thirsty lion. No, really. Last week the baseball head coach's twitter bill had a character of a lion with a bloody facea'it has been changed but the photo made quite an impression. The school's athletic image was previously that of the "Gutty Little Bruins" which implies, obviously, that the staff is small but shows courage against larger opponents. It's a cute little moniker. For a little league team. The lion is king of the junglea'actually king of the African savannas, but marketplace does sound more fiercea'and is anticipated by all. The lion is not guttya'it guts its victim. And that remarkable picture, whether planned or not by Mora, should resonate with the remainder of the Pac-12. But UCLA is still showing signs of major support of its basketball program and the Howland dismissal could be anAinnocuousAsign of that. Howland, despite three Final Four appearances and seven NCAA contest visits, was release by UCLA. The reason, in accordance with UCLA running director Dan Guerrero, wasn't only Howland's history.
