Iowa State's protection situation is a major concern maybe not because of new starters, but because the starters which are returning had issues staying consistent. C.J. Barnett and Christian Bryant each had their moments in 2012 but were hardly ever really in sync with each other constantly, and it generated many protection breakdowns, particularly early in the growing season. One other issue at the safety position is depth, or absence thereof, with players like Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown and Jamie Wood who have done very little within their Buckeye jobs backing up Barnett and Bryant. Help appears to be along the way in the form of freshmen Vonn Bell and Jayme Thompson. As a way to be found by seniors to be described as a constant pair in the back of the security however it is up to Barnett and Bryant.
